The SentryKIDS® has been around for over 15 years, and in that time we believe we’ve developed one of the easiest to use fingerprint capture interface’s on the market today. With one single click you can automatically capture all 10 fingerprints in succession, starting with the right thumb and cycling through all the way to left little finger. With our easy to use fingerprint capture interface, you’ll be able to capture all 10 fingerprints in as fast as 10 seconds!

Plus, we give you the ability to easily review the magnified fingerprint image by clicking on the corresponding button beneath the fingerprint thumbnail; and if you need to retake any single fingerprint, simply click on the the fingerprint thumbnail itself and you will be prompted to place the appropriate finger back on the scanner to capture it again.

SentryKIDS fingerprinting software also gives you the ability to manipulate the thresholds of the fingerprint after you have captured it. After capturing the fingerprint you have the options of enhancing the brightness and/or the contrast to better show the ridges on fingerprints that were either too dark or too light upon capture. Be advised, you are not adding or removing information, but simply enhancing the fingerprint information that is already there. And if you don’t want to enhance the entire fingerprint, SentryKIDS gives you the ability to zoom in, pan left-to-right or up-and-down, and to enhance multiple individual areas as well. All to give you the best fingerprint image available.

Anyone with information about the woman’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or Detective Ring at 980-333-7039.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Police say a convicted sex offender and his wife have been arrested in the kidnapping of an 11-year-old in 1991 who recently walked into a Northern California police station.

Police say 58-year-old Phillip Garrido and his 54-year-old wife Nancy Garrido were arrested in the kidnapping case Wednesday. The Megan’s Law database says Phillip Garrido has a conviction for rape by force or fear.

The woman came into a San Francisco Bay area police station and said she was Jaycee Lee Dugard, a blond, ponytailed girl when she was abducted as she headed to a school bus stop 18 years ago.

The woman was in good health. It was not immediately clear when she had surfaced at the station.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Sheriff’s officials said Thursday they believe a woman who walked into a police station had been kidnapped as an 11-year-old in 1991 outside her South Lake Tahoe home. Two people were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping.

The woman came into a San Francisco Bay area police station and said she was Jaycee Lee Dugard, a blond, ponytailed girl when she was abducted as she headed to a school bus stop 18 years ago, said sheriff’s Lt. Les Lovell of the El Dorado Sheriff’s Department.

“We’re 99 percent sure it’s her,” Lovell said. He said DNA tests were being conducted. The woman was in good health. It was not immediately clear when she had surfaced at the station.

Lovell said Concord police did an investigation after the woman surfaced, and he received a call Wednesday from investigators who had tentatively identified her as Dugard.

Her family has been contacted and they are in the process of arranging a meeting, said Lovell, who was a detective assigned to help investigate the kidnapping in 1991. “We are very confident at this point in time that it is her.”

Jimmie Lee, a spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department, said FBI and El Dorado sheriff’s deputies arrested two suspects Wednesday night. They were being held in the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez.

Lee said the two were being held for investigation of several charges, including kidnapping, but he could not elaborate.

Law enforcement sources said authorities were also searching a home in Antioch.

Dugard’s stepfather, Carl Probyn, said the news was like winning the lottery.

“To have this happen where we get her back alive, and where she remembers things from the past, and to have people in custody is a triple win,” he told The Sacramento Bee.

Witnesses reported that a vehicle with two people drove up to Dugard and abducted her while her stepfather was watching on June 10, 1991, the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release Thursday.

In media reports at the time, the girl’s stepfather said he heard Jaycee scream then jumped on a bicycle and frantically pedaled after the car in a failed effort to follow it up a hill. He then turned around and screamed at neighbors to call 911.

The case attracted national attention and was featured on TV’s “America’s Most Wanted,” which broadcast a composite drawing of a suspect seen in the car.

Probyn said his wife, Terry, had spoken with Dugard by phone on Wednesday. He said the mother and their 19-year-old daughter were flying from their Southern California home to meet with Dugard in Northern California.

Investigators first visited with his wife about three weeks ago, he said.

Probyn said he endured years of suspicion from FBI agents who believed he may have been involved in the abduction. He eventually lost hope that he would ever see his stepdaughter alive.

“Then you pray that you get her body back so there is an ending,” Probyn said.

Lovell said investigators have been working the case consistently since she was abducted and new leads had surfaced over time.

“You bet it’s a surprise. This is not the normal resolution to a kidnapping,” he said.

Duke cites landmark Alzheimer’s discovery

Confirmation is needed, but scientists report they found a 2nd gene for the brain disease, one that predicts age of onset.

By Sarah Avery

Posted: Monday, Jul. 13, 2009

DURHAM In what could be a repeat of their blockbuster gene discovery of 1993, scientists at Duke University Medical Center have identified a second gene linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The new gene not only appears to predict risk, but also pegs the approximate age of onset for the degenerative brain disorder that afflicts 5.3 million Americans.

If the Duke team’s findings are replicated by scientists elsewhere, the discovery could open an additional avenue of research for drug development.

“We now have the ability to look at both [genes],” said Dr. Allen Roses, director of Duke’s Deane Drug Discovery Institute and lead author the study. Findings were presented Sunday at the meeting of the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease in Vienna, Austria.

The announcement was met with great interest – and caution – by other scientists.

Since Roses and a team of gene hunters at Duke identified the first genetic link to Alzheimer’s disease 16 years ago, many promising leads have fizzled under further analysis.

“I think this is really interesting, but it needs to be replicated,” said Margaret Pericak-Vance, a genetics researcher at Miami University who was a key member of the group at Duke that identified the original gene, known as APOE.

The gene had been the only one associated with late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form. It generally hits people after the age of 65 and gradually robs them of memory, personality and function.

Roses agreed that additional confirmation is necessary. He said he welcomes other groups to verify the findings. He also is working to set up a large international study that will gauge how well the new gene predicts Alzheimer’s disease in the general population, as well as test a potential drug for people whose genetic markers indicate they are at high risk of developing illness.

“We would love to be able to start a study by late 2010,” Roses said.

The new genetic target is called TOMM40, and it has been a subject of interest for several years to geneticists exploring the hereditary nature of Alzheimer’s disease.

Roses’ group homed in on TOMM40 and identified how it and APOE appear to interact and predispose people to get sick.

Like cards dealt from a deck, certain combinations of the two genes and their variations have significance. An unfortunate draw increases the risk of disease, and the risk of it striking before the age of 80.

There are four varieties of the APOE gene. If a person is dealt an APOE4 gene from his mother, and an APOE4 gene from his father, he’s got a double shot of APOE4 – the highest genetic risk for Alzheimer’s. About half the cases of late-onset Alzheimer’s disease are associated with APOE4.

But the other half remained a mystery.

Now it turns out that the APOE3 version of the gene may also be important, depending on what a person has been simultaneously dealt from the TOMM40 deck.

In a way, TOMM40 is a wild card. It comes in two forms – long and short. If a long sequence of TOMM40 is found along with the APOE3 gene, a person has an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease before age 80.

Roses estimates that TOMM40 may account for another 35 percent of Alzheimer’s cases.

“This is potentially a very exciting discovery,” said Dr. Daniel Kaufer of the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine’s Memory and Cognitive Disorders Program. “There has been a big black hole in our knowledge of later onset Alzheimer’s. But the real clinical value remains to be seen down the road.”

In their summer newsletter, Marc Klaas of the Klaas Kids Foundation describes exactly why the Amber Alert system in the United States is “broken”. For anyone who believes our current Amber Alert system is a fail safe for saving missing children, this is a must read.

America’s Amber Alert system is broken. It takes too long to activate. The criteria required for activation are too strict and inflexible. While geographic considerations are a necessary component of a viable plan, the wrong ones have been applied. The technologies
selected for primary distribution are either antiquated or nonsensical. It does not help the kidnapped children who need it the most.

Ernie Allen, President of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), has repeatedly said that “time is of the essence” when children are kidnapped. His contention is supported by statistics. Only 42.9% of missing children are reported to law enforcement within the first two hours. In 56% of cases, two hours lapsed before reports were made. An Amber Alert cannot be issued until a police report is filed, yet 76.2% of children murdered as a result of abduction are dead within three hours. Why then, did Mr. Allen and his colleagues design a National Amber Alert program that routinely requires 3-5 hours to activate once the criteria has been met and the report has been filed?

My Polly was kidnapped from her bedroom by a bearded, knife-wielding madman in front of two witnesses who were unable to provide descriptive or license plate information on the getaway car. Therefore, Polly’s case would not have merited an Amber Alert. Within an hour of
Polly being kidnapped, two Sheriff’s deputies had the kidnapper within their grasp. Unaware that a crime had occurred, they questioned him and then helped to pull his car out of a ditch and sent him on his way…

Police say a toddler found wandering in the middle of a busy Pineville roadway early this morning has been reunited with her parents.

The girl, thought to be 2 or 3 years old, was spotted about 4:30 a.m. in the middle of Johnston Road in Pineville.

The girl was found in the 10200 block of Johnston Road, a short distance north of McMullen Creek Parkway. That is north of Pineville-Matthews Road.

Police say the motorist who found the girl took her to a nearby gas station and called police. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police joined with Pineville police to try and determine where the girl lives.

Authorities began calling phone numbers at residences within a half-mile radius of the Johnston Road area. Shortly before 11 a.m., CMPD Officer Robert Fey said police were able to find the girl’s parents.

The girl was not injured, police say.

Whether it’s stories like the gentleman below, the boy from Greenville, SC a little over a month ago, or any one of the all too many stories that happen around the U.S. and the world all too often, these are the the things you read and hear about that lay heavy on your heart. Occurrences like these are the ones we strive to prevent, and wish we could end altogether.

Our hearts go out to the family.

The following article is from our local Charlotte Observer, http://www.charlotteobserver.com/breaking/story/721073.html

Alzheimer’s patient found dead in field

State to investigate how the Alzheimer’s patient left unnoticed from an assisted living center in Mooresville.

By Cleve R. Wootson Jr.
cwootson@charlotteobserver.com

Posted: Wednesday, May. 13, 2009

A 91-year-old grandfather was found dead in a Mooresville field Sunday night, eight hours after he wandered away from an assisted living facility.

Several investigations are being conducted, but officials at Summit Place, in Mooresville, said it appears Joseph Clay Johnston, who had the degenerative brain disease Alzheimer’s, walked away during a Mother’s Day event at the facility.

“There were a lot of children and visitors celebrating the day with their grandparents,” said Joseph Mikalajunas, president of Bell Senior Living, who owns and operates Summit Place, in a statement. He said there appeared to be no foul play.

Johnston was last seen alive at Summit Place around 1:45 p.m., a little less than eight hours before he was located in a field on U.S. 21, police said. Summit officials estimated it was about 400 feet from the facility.

Johnston’s family said Tuesday that they want to know how Johnston, who could barely walk and lived in a secure part of the facility, got away without anyone noticing. He’d lived at Summit Place for more than two years.

“I’m at peace with the fact that my dad’s in a better place, but I’m very upset with the circumstances around his death,” said Cynthia Tyler of Aiken, S.C. “My dad should have passed away in his bed, or in that facility. Not in the middle of a field, by himself, alone.”

Tyler said she got a call from her sister Sunday night, asking if she had been up to see their father. Her sister said officials at Summit Place had called, saying a family member had signed Johnston out.

Tyler said that for the family, taking Johnston, who was unsteady on his feet and in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s was, “out of the question. Most of the time, I go see daddy for my benefit and he just wanted to be in the bed all the time and sleep.”

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services plans to conduct an investigation after police conclude theirs, said Jim Jones, a spokesman for the department, which regulates nursing homes. Jones said inspectors had been inside the facility last week for an annual inspection, but the results were still pending.

He was unsure whether Sunday’s incident would affect the results of that inspection. The facility had no deficiencies or penalties when it was inspected in April 2008.

The death raises the same sort of questions about the safety of residents that came up when Mouy Tang, 46, went missing from a Cleveland County assisted-living home last September.

Tang, who had schizophrenia and other medical issues, was never located. In March, a state advisory panel recommended record fines of $50,000 against Unique Living for violations after an investigation into Tang’s disappearance.

So you already bought your GPS device from another vendor, and now you’ve found out how over priced their service plans are. This is not an uncommon problem, and sentryGPSid can help.

If you haven’t activated your service through a separate vendor as of yet, we can have your SIM card activated for no charge to you. You will have access to our webportal and your choice of our affordable tracking plans.

If you have activated your service with another provider, you will first have to cancel your service with them and most likely purchase and activate a new SIM card through sentryGPSid. We can then activate your GPS device and the service plan of your choice.

No more need to be stuck in an over-priced GPS service plan with less features than what the sentryGPSid web portal provides!

The sentryGPSid now offers users three service levels and pricing plans to choose from; Basic ($11/month), Premium ($19/month) and Unlimited ($40/month).

The Basic Service Plan
The Basic Service Plan is the most economical of the sentryGPSid service plans, and is meant for emergency location of the device only. With this plan, there are no regular updates to the GPS web portal but the user is allowed 10 manual location ‘pings’ per month. A ‘ping’ is any time the user texts the device to obtain it’s location, or users the Get Current Position or Urgent Tracking Mode through the web portal.

The Premium Service Plan
The Premium Service Plan is the most popular service plan and includes automatic updates of the GPS tracking device’s location to the web portal every 30 minutes, as well as an additional 50 manual pings per month for the user.

The Unlimited Service Plan
The Unlimited Service Plan is the choice of those who want to be able to track and monitor their device at all times, with no limitations. The Unlimited Service Plan includes automatic updates of the GPS tracking device’s location to the web portal every 15 minutes, as well as unlimited manual pings each month.

Sentry Technologies has been a leader in innovation for protecting our loved ones for a long time, and now they take another step way past what any of the other GPS personal location device companies on the market come even close to providing. The power of polygonal geofencing. Some companies provide radial geofencing, giving you the ability to draw large or small circles that usually encompass way more geographic area than you truly want to encircle. Now with the SentryGPS web portal you can draw geofences that cover your desired area much more precisely than ever before. Take the three examples below:

Local Neighborhood Geofence

The first geofence example I’ll present to you is that of a very tightly defined local area where a loved one may travel within his or her own neighborhood. For an adult with Alzheimer’s or other form of dementia, this may be their daily route to walk or ride their bike around the neighborhood. Or maybe it is a child’s route to school, and also encircling the block the school is located on. The sentryGPSid is the first GPS personal location device that can give you this precise of control of your geofence on any level, and the benefits on the local level are clear.

Geofencing for long distance travels

Another example for using polygonal geofencing is that of long distance traveling. The SentryGPS web portal allows you to create a geofence that will monitor your loved one’s GPS device whether they are traveling on vacation, work, or going back to college. Whether they are traveling one hour, four hours or 14 hours, the SentryGPS web portal gives you the ability to highlight their actual travel path so you can know right away if they take a detour from their normal course. Looking at the example to the right, imagine how large of an area would be covered by a radial geofence. Over 95% of the area covered by a radial geofence encompassing both end points would be outside of the true travel path.

Geofences for traveling into town.

Maybe the first two examples don’t pertain exactly to your every day needs for a GPS location device. Maybe you need a way to track your loved one on their daily commute while traveling from their home to either work, or school, or just into town. Maybe your loved one lives in a long term care facility, yet travels into town for work every day. The example to your left shows you how you can highlight that daily travel path on a local level, and encompass larger areas on both ends.

How fast is one mile per minute? Well the obvious answer is 60 miles per hour, but let’s look at a graphical representation of exactly how fast 1 mile per minute really is:

A Missing Child Can Disappear At 1 Mile Per Minute

Click on the image for a larger version and you will see 12 concentric circles based around Lincoln, Nebraska. The inner most circle represents just how far a missing child can disappear in 1 hour. Each additional circle represents an additional hour, with the outer most circle representing only 12 hours. That’s 720 miles.

Even 1 mile is well out of the range of any RFID based child location system on the market today, in fact most of them do not even have a range of more than 600 feet – that’s just 2 football fields. At 1 mile (5280 feet) a minute (60 seconds), a missing child could be out of range of any of these RFID based child location systems in just 8.8 seconds (5280 feet / 60 seconds). So within 10 seconds of your child going missing he or she could be well outside of the range of any RFID based child location system. Just 10 seconds. And that means there’s not even an indication of which direction to start searching.

That’s why a GPS child locator is so much more effective in locating a missing child than an RFID based system. The sentryGPSid child locator is not a locally based system with a limited range. It has the ability to locate a missing child anywhere in the world, through any internet connected computer. As long as the sentryGPSid can pick up a cellular signal in order to broadcast it’s location back up to our webportal.

Additionally, not only does the sentryGPSid allow you to locate your device anywhere a cellular signal can be obtained, our geofencing technology also lets you know BEFORE your child goes missing by sending you customized alerts as soon as your child leaves their predefined safe zones. You can also send a text message to your device at any time and it will respond back it’s exact location as well as a link to a map which will show you it’s exact position.

SentryKIDS® pioneered the digital child ID and child fingerprinting market over 15 years ago, and we continue to be lead the industry in quality, innovation, professionalism and value. With a SentryKIDS® FingerTIPS™ child ID and child fingerprinting system you can take fast, clean, digital fingerprints in a fraction of the time it takes to use the ink & paper method – and there is no messy cleanup either!

Now Sentry Technologies, the company behind the SentryKIDS® digital child fingerprinting software, is offering the most proactive approach at protecting children from wandering or getting lost – and we are doing it at the most economical price point with more features than anyone else!

sentryGPSid GPS personal location device

The sentryGPSid™ is the smallest, most intelligent and most affordable GPS personal location device on the market today. Bar none. The sentryGPSid™ has the ability to alert a parent that their child is wandering BEFORE they go missing, and in the event of the unthinkable, the sentryGPSid™ provides parents a way to track their child’s GPS device in real time through our industry leading GPS tracking web portal.

At a price of just $185 for the device, and a $19/month service fee, the sentryGPSid™ is hands-down the most affordable GPS child location device available today. Other providers will charge almost 3 times that amount for their GPS child location devices and services – and they don’t provide any additional features, while some even want to charge parents more for features we include with our GPS tracking web portal!

Stay tuned and check back often as we discuss all of the new features in depth as the update is released; but we just can’t resist giving a sneak preview of some of the enhanced functionality and features.

Here are just a few of the features v1.1b will include:

Enhanced mapping that allows for easy viewing of the last 1 to 50 data points of each device and the ability to display the geofences right on the tracking map.

An easy “Zoom to Device” feature – this is especially great for accounts with multiple devices.

A Hitorical Map Portlet that now lets you visually see the travel history of a selected device on the map as well as in text. And the travel history is now exportable too!

And my favorite – and industry first, Polygonal Geofences. This makes the SentryGPS webportal the first in the industry to not limit you to just radial geofences. We worked hard on this feature because we know not every safe or forbidden zone is a circle!

So your son or daughter is now driving on their own, but you still want to keep tabs on them when they are outside of the nest. The sentryGPSid™ is the perfect GPS device for keeping track of your teen driver both in the car and out!

The sentryGPSid™ has configurable Speed Warnings that will let you know if your child is going faster than you want them to go. You’ll immediately get a notification via text, email, or in your archived alerts to tell you they have exceeded the speed threshold you have set for them. You can also check their travel history to see where they were when they broke the speed threshold (or at anytime) and also determine for how long they were exceeding your speed threshold. And unlike some GPS device’s on the market today that are permanently mounted in one car, the sentryGPSid™ can be taken with your teen wherever he or she may go so you can even know if they are in a car going too fast when a friend is driving.

Worried that your teen may turn off his or her GPS device so you can’t monitor them? The sentryGPSid™ also allows you to set up an alert to be notified each and every time the device is powered on or off.

At just $185 for the device, and $19 per month for unlimited access to the SentryGPS web portal, the sentryGPSid™ is easily the most affordable GPS location device on the market.
